Who counts as a person. A "person" is a PostHog person. Guests are an anonymous ID per app install: reinstalling (or clearing app data) creates a new person, which inflates "new" and deflates "returning". Two devices count as two people unless the user signs in on both — sign-in (identify) merges each device into one person, including that device’s earlier guest activity. Signing out resets the device to a fresh anonymous ID, so later guest use there counts as a new person. Merges only happen on sign-in; guest IDs that never sign in are never re-joined, and PostHog does not split a person once merged. Internal traffic.
